About Narrative Therapy Counselling
What is Narrative Therapy?
As humans, we are always making sense of our lives. We notice events each day
and link them together to form stories. These stories help us explain our
experiences and give them meaning, this is like the “plot” of the story. A story is
like a thread that weaves events together over time.
We all have many stories happening at once. For example, we may have stories
about:
• our abilities,
• our struggles,
• our skills and strengths,
• our hopes and desires,
The way we link events and the meaning we give them shapes how these stories
are told. Using this idea of stories, Narrative Therapy is a way of talking that helps people look at their lives.
Sometimes the story feels dominated by the problem. Narrative Therapy says:
you are not the problem. The problem is the problem.
Together, we can look for other parts of your story, including your strengths,
values, culture and hopes, and build a story that better shows who you are.
These stories can grow and become more powerful than the problem story.
Narrative Therapy also looks at the bigger picture of people’s lives.
It understands that things like culture, gender, sexual orientation,
neurodivergence and ability all shape our experiences and stories. We respect
and value these diļ¬erences in every session.
